Why I'm Running

My name is Stephen Huver, and I'm running for Trustee of the London District Catholic School Board to represent Elgin County. My family has a legacy of service on the Elgin Catholic board, and my own background in business and years of community volunteering are why I'm stepping up now — to bring a practical, family-first perspective to the board table.

My Platform

I'm running to strengthen Catholic education in Elgin County by focusing on student well-being, responsible stewardship of resources, transparent governance, and strong partnerships with families, parishes, and the wider community.

Student Well-Being, Achievement & Support for Every Learner

My Position: Catholic education should form the whole person — academically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally — and every child, including those with additional needs, deserves the support to thrive.

Within Trustee Authority: Trustees don't manage classrooms, but they set priorities, approve policies, and hold the board accountable for outcomes, including special education.

  • Support evidence-based literacy and numeracy strategies.
  • Advocate for mental-health supports, counselling access, and safe school environments.
  • Strengthen special education supports and early intervention.
  • Ensure Catholic identity is reflected meaningfully in curriculum, pastoral care, and school culture.
  • Promote equitable access to programs for rural students in Elgin County.

Catholic Identity, Parish Partnerships & Strong Staff

My Position: Catholic schools thrive when they're deeply connected to parish life and Catholic teaching, and staffed by people who are valued and equipped to succeed.

Within Trustee Authority: Trustees set direction for Catholic formation, pastoral partnerships, and staffing frameworks, and evaluate the Director of Education — without managing individual employees.

  • Strengthen collaboration between schools and local parishes in Elgin County.
  • Support chaplaincy programs, sacramental preparation partnerships, and faith-based service projects.
  • Ensure Catholic social teaching informs board policy.
  • Promote professional development and policies that support staff well-being and retention.

Rural Advocacy & Community Voice

My Position: Elgin County's rural communities face unique challenges — transportation, declining enrollment, aging buildings, program access — and deserve to be heard and represented at the board table.

Within Trustee Authority: Trustees can advocate, set priorities, and ensure rural and community input shapes board decisions.

  • Advocate for the long-term viability of Elgin County's rural schools in board planning decisions.
  • Improve transportation planning and bus route reliability.
  • Ensure rural students have equal access to extracurriculars, technology, and specialized programs.
  • Support real opportunities for community input from across Elgin County.
  • Communicate board decisions clearly and promptly.

Responsible Financial Stewardship & Safe, Modern Schools

My Position: Taxpayer dollars should be used wisely, transparently, and in ways that directly benefit students — including the buildings they learn in.

Within Trustee Authority: Trustees approve the annual budget, monitor spending, oversee capital planning, and ensure compliance with provincial regulations.

  • Push for clear, accessible financial reporting to the public.
  • Prioritize spending on classroom resources, special education, and student supports.
  • Ensure capital projects — repairs, expansions, accessibility upgrades, maintenance — are planned responsibly and transparently.
  • Advocate for fair provincial funding for rural Catholic schools and aging rural buildings.

I'm running to represent Trustee for all of Elgin County. You're eligible to vote for me if you are 18 years of age or older and a Tax Supporter of the London District Catholic School Board within Elgin County.
